Organic Salt
Organic salt, often referred to as “bio salt,” is a topic of discussion within the European organic sector. Although the European Commission is considering including salt under organic certification, no specific production rules have been established yet. This means that currently, no officially certified organic salt is available.
Why is there no certified organic salt?
Salt is a mineral, not an agricultural product, which makes it difficult to fit within the traditional framework of organic certification. Although the new organic regulation provides the possibility of producing salt organically, concrete guidelines and certification criteria are still missing.
Use of salt in organic products
Despite the lack of certified organic salt, the use of regular salt in organic food products is allowed. Salt is not counted when determining the percentage of organic ingredients in a product, as it is a mineral and not of agricultural origin.
Sustainable alternatives and future outlook
Some producers focus on sustainable methods of salt harvesting, such as the use of sea salt obtained through environmentally friendly practices. Although these products are not officially certified as “organic,” they do align with the principles of sustainability and environmental awareness that are central to the organic sector.
The debate on organic salt certification continues. It is advisable to follow developments in this area for the most up-to-date information.
